24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - 11TH SEPTEMBER 2016

FR. ANDREW WRITES:-

Lots of new starts at this time of year, new term, new school.  Changes can be exciting, challenging and sometimes disorientating. Life is full of them.

One thing that doesn’t change though and that is God. He is the changeless One.

The lyrics of this contemporary Christian song, ‘Faithful One’, come to mind.  Feel free to reflect on them.

 ‘Faithful one, so unchanging

Ageless one, you’re my rock of peace

Lord of all I depend on you

I call out to you, again and again

I call out to you, again and again

You are my rock in times of trouble

You lift me up when I fall down

All through the storm

Your love is, the anchor

My hope is in You alone’

 (Songwriter: Brian Doerksen)

The Good News is that God is there. He is faithful, no matter what it may seem like, whatever storms are there.   God is there.  As St Paul writes, in homage to God ‘To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God’ (Tim 1: 17).   God is eternal, undying and invisible, extraordinary!

We are inheritors of that promise made to Abraham as it says in the First Reading

‘I will make your offspring as many as the stars of heaven, and all this land which I promised I will give to your descendants.’  (Ex 32: 13-14)

What an amazing promise!  You and I are those descendants of Abraham.  God looks after us.

God can change us, if we allow Him, especially through prayer, the Sacraments the Mass and Confession to become more like Him, no matter what the external changes are. He is always there.  How incredible!
