Assistant Priest: Fr Mike Maguire

Fr Mike was ordained deacon in 2016, ordained priest on the 24th June 2017, and began as Assistant Priest in our parish in September 2017.  Born to a Catholic family, he lived in the North East of England, until he began studying for a degree in Nursing, in London.  As a young lad, Fr Mike was always drawn to priesthood but felt a stronger sense that the Lord was calling him to follow a different path; to serve the sick.  After qualifying as a nurse, Fr Mike enjoyed a 13-year career in Accident & Emergency departments across London.  Before leaving the North-East, Fr Mike recalls his parish priest giving him the best piece of advice he had ever received; “don’t just hear Christ”, he said, “but listen to him”.  Throughout his career, however, Fr Mike says “there were times when I felt God nudging me, almost telling me to stand back from the hustle and bustle of A&E, and listen to Him a little more.  But the more nudges I felt, the more I resisted!”  It was in Lourdes, however, that Fr Mike began to realise what God’s plan was for his life.  As he says, “I not only saw how the sick truly embraced their calling from Christ, but I finally realised that the years I had cared for the sick, I had also been caring for Christ Himself.  The Lord was working through the sick and dying to help me to understand my true vocation in life.  I finally gave in to the nudges, and I ‘listened’ to the Lord:  Then did I know that God was calling me to follow Him on a different journey to priesthood!”  Fr Mike was accepted to begin formation in 2012, during which time his placements included the parishes of Staines and Kensal Rise, Feltham Young Offenders Prison, and the Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College.  Fr Mike spent his diaconate year in the parish of St Pius X, St Charles Square.
